SILLA BARCELONA MODEL
Furniture for the German Pavilion in Barcelona
Mies Van der Rohe
1929
barcelona chair

Barcelona chair:

The architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) designed in 1929 a piece which has become an icon of the modern furniture of s.XX.
It was part of a group formed also by the ottoman and a table. This furniture was designed for the German Pavilion at the Universal Exhibition of 1929. The materials used for manufacturing were polished stainless steel for the structure and pigskin leather for the finish. Mies employed new technologies and materials developed during the First World War: the use of stainless steel for domestic furniture is a clear example. This design was based on the "sella curulis", the chair used by the magistrates of Rome. Interestingly, the kings of Spain used them as thrones in their visit to the pavilion.
